Learning about the non-fiction writing genre has some exciting surprises!

We use Being A Writer by Developmental Studies.  This program is a K-6 genre based comprehensive writing program.  In Kindergarten, our 4th unit is called, “Just the Facts,” and has the students exploring a number of different trade books to support non-fiction writing anchor texts.  This past week, we read the book, Mr. Santizo’s Tasty Treats by Alice K. Flanagan.   In this story, we read facts about Mr. Santizo and his work, life, and family.  Next, we interviewed an adult in our school community so we could learn more facts about his life.  We decided to interview Mr. Pierce, our principal.  The Kindergarteners loved learning about Mr. Pierce’s Family and interests!  As a special treat, Mrs. McCulley used Mr. Santizo’s chocolate chip cookie recipe in the back of the book to make us some tasty treats!

Mr. Santizo is a baker in Chicago. This anchor text helped us learn how to organize facts about others when writing!

We generated questions to ask Mr. Pierce that could help us learn more about him. We used his answers to write facts!

Spring Has Sprung!

Kind of….we have seen a few nice days, but nothing to write home about:(  However, we DID earn a painting party for earning 10 more class punches on our PBIS Card:)  This worked out perfectly, because we were able to paint the beautiful spring scenes from our Breakthrough Book of the Week, Colors of the World!  We have some major mini Monet’s on our hands:)
